4:20 Freestyle:

  1. Each player will register before the event with the dog or dogs.

  2. Run order will be decided randomly and then adjusted by an official so a handler or dog does not run back to back.  The run order will be posted and announced.

  3. Each team will get 20 seconds to perform a freestyle routine or disc dog tricks.

  4. Pro division may only use 4 discs; Novice division may only use 6 discs.

  5. Walls, the ceiling, and barriers are out of bounds as soon as the disc touches it and will be scored as a miss.

  6. Handlers may not pick up any discs off of the ground during their routine or they will receive a "Did not Qualify", aka DQ, which is a zero score.

  7. A dog may pick up a disc off of the ground and hand it back to the handler.

  8. Once the previous team has cleared their discs from the field and has their dog restrained, the next team will take the field.

  9. The announcer will give the team a "Ready, Set, Go" prompt.  Time starts at "Go".

  10. Nature Breaks stop time and will be cleaned immediately. The timer will restart your round.

  11. Teams will not provide individual music, the announcer will play continuous, upbeat music.

  12. Teams will be scored by 2 or 3 freestyle judges on a 10 point scale with 1/10th point increments in the following 3 categories:

Canine: The dog's athleticism, drive, handler focus, and proper anticipation of the handler's commands, moves, throws, and accuracy at catching flying discs.

Handler: The handler's ability to showcase their skill in disc throwing, dog training, and to provide an entertaining round.

Execution: This is an "Overall" category.  Judges score the general impression of the routine as a whole with special consideration for showmanship, presentation, energy, and overall crowd appeal.
Canine, Handler, Entertainment value, Difficulty, and Uniqueness are considered in this score.

  13. At the end of the 20 second round, the announcer will say "Time" and scoring will end.  If discs are in the air at this time, it will be scored into the round.

  14. if a handler picks up a disc off of the ground and receives a "DQ", it will not be announced by the officials.

  15. After each round, the handler should gather their discs and dog and clear the field quickly so the event can move quickly.  Score will be displayed at the end of each routine by the judges on a score card for the competitor and spectators to see (much like DWTS or Gymnastics style scoring).

  16. After the 1st round run order is complete, there will be a break while scores are tallied.

  17. Cuts may be made due to time limitations.  If needed, only the top 10 scoring teams will advance to the second round.

  18. The teams advancing into the second round will be put into a reverse run order, from lowest scoring round to highest scoring round.  This may be modified by an official in order to not run a dog or handler back to back.

  19. First round scores are combined with second round scores for a combined total score to determine placement.

  20. In the event of a tie for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, the only tie-breaker is another 4:20 sudden death round between the tied competitors.  The winner of a coin toss will decide to go first or second in the tie-breaker round.
